Mei Kawajiri is the nail artist behind the most viral manicures on your Instagram feed.
Growing up in traditional Kyoto, Mei chose to dye her hair red and paint her nails sky blue. She doodled in textbooks and considered becoming a tattoo artist. Realizing she preferred a form of expression that could be changed with her moods, she took on the challenge to paint on the smallest canvas she could find: nails.
Mei opened her own salon in Harajuku, which quickly became a destination for the most dynamic manicure in Tokyo. After moving to New York, Mei redefined basic editorial and runway manicures, transforming them into an elevated accessory and individualized form of art.
Mei's nail art is frequently in the pages of Self Service, i-D, and Pop Magazine, as well as campaigns for Vivienne Westwood, Balenciaga, and Miu-Miu. Marc Jacobs, Dua Lipa, Gigi Hadid, Rosalía, and Cardi B are among her celebrity clientele.
Mei was recognized as one of the most inspiring and innovative creative trailblazers by the British Fashion Council in 2018 and continues to lead with passion and an indomitable spirit.
